Bernard Harry Abrey – at KEGS 1955-60, died 20th January 2023 aged 79
Bernard went to Chadacre Agricultural College after leaving school but left after one week to join his father at home on the farm in Risby, 3 miles west of Bury St. Edmunds. He took over the pig herd of 1,000 head, increasing to 2,000 over the next three years.
He married Diana in April 1964 and joined in partnership with his parents and younger brother Derrick. The farm increased from 176 acres initially to more than 630 by the end of the 1990s. He was involved with Parish and Community Councils, local charity trustees, St. Giles Church in Risby and where his funeral service took place.
He taught at the Sunday School for many years, was Churchwarden, Deanery Synod Member, Bishop’s Council Representative for Thingoe Deanery, and Chairman of the Village Hall Committee for many years. His comment at the end of his contribution towards the School List was “Very happy and contented life – wouldn’t change a thing”.
We are indebted to Alan Jary for informing us of Bernard’s passing and representing the OBA at the funeral service.
