Gordon Thomas Turvey – at KEGS 1942-47, died 19th December 2022, aged 91.
Gordon passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of Monday, 19th December 2022 in Cruden Bay View Nursing Home, Aberdeenshire. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Sue and Kim.
On leaving school Gordon took up a Motor Engineering Apprenticeship with Mann Egerton in Northgate Street and also did a postal course in Engineering with Sheffield University. Knowing that he would be called up for National Service in July 1952 he volunteered to join the REME (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers). After initial training in England he was posted to Korea where he saw active service. When hostilities ceased he was sent to Egypt, then Kenya and after that was demobbed and classified as a Reservist. In 1956 when the Suez Crisis erupted he was recalled and sent to Suez for further active service.
In 1957 Gordon married a Suffolk girl, Margaret (Peggy) Parsons, who had a career in Nursing. Having completed his Apprenticeship, he moved to various engineering jobs around England, his last and longest appointment was at Derby in Industrial Refrigeration. Gordon was always a keen sportsman particularly in Hockey. He played in goal until he was in his 70s and qualified as a hockey referee in Scotland.
On retirement they moved from Derby to Ellon in Aberdeenshire. Their younger daughter was already living in the area, having married a Marine Engineer engaged in the Offshore Oil Industry.
We are grateful to Ken Howes for these memories.
